THE SIERRA AND NEARBY ATTRACTIONS
The Extremadura Rural Retreats at Montanchez are ideally placed right in the middle of the golden triangle of Merida, Caceres and Trujillo, three towns with a wealth of history and fascinating old town centres, all within 30 minutes.
There is so much to see and do within an hour of Montanchez. Stunning countryside including mountains, plains, woodland and the very special dehesa environment of Extremadura, meadowland with cork oak and holm oak woods where the black Iberic pigs are raised naturally in order to produce the famed Extremadura jamon.
There are beautiful walks directly from all the properties with spectacular views and wonderful bird wathcing possibilities. The Sierra de Montanchez is blessed with a network of ancient paths only accessible by foot, nature is undisturbed and provides a rich environment for many species of wildlife, especially birds, insects and reptiles.
The flora of the sierra is also very diversified with hundred of wild flowers, herbs and fruit growing in profusion, particularly stunning in spring, a long season in Extremadura, starting at the beginning of February until the beginning of May.
